I've recently discovered GO, and I'm delighted to find so many fellow gem afficionados. I started faceting back in the 80's, and it's been on again off again depending on things like children, parents, work - life in general I suppose. I received lots of encouragement lately, so it's back to the machine again. I've cut quite a lot of spinel and harder materials - sapphire, chrysoberyl - and some garnet, tourmaline, tanzanite, even some amethyst a few times. When I started I resolved only to cut natural material, and I've remained true to that intent. With expensive material I often design cuts for the individual piece, although I have some stand-bys. Just lately I've been working a lot with Gemcad and BOG, refining step-cut pavilions into more interesting designs with quite curious results. These need to be proof-cut, but I hope to be able to share some of the results soon. There may even be a book in this somewhere! BTW I live in West Vancouver, or probably more accurately Wet Vancouver.
