Hello everyone! First off id like to say that this forum has a massive pile of information to digest. Although i understand little about cut gems i find this site to be of great use to this humble uneducated rockhound. I live in an isolated area just west of jasper national park and excel in Xtreme adventures that in past years have included fishing photography and of course rockhounding. My biggest problem is my lack of knowledge in spotting potential sites for further sampling and inspection. The area i prospect is rich in metamorphic rocks and many fault lines that provide a rockhounds paradise. I have big plans for this spring/summer! Preparing for a 15 day hike into a dangerously remote canyon that until recent years has been completely covered with a glacier. That trip leaves may 1st before the high alpine snow pack melts and makes too much flowing water. With a brand new camera from santa it would make sense to take some pics of any potential gem deposits i come across. Id love to be able to learn to cut my own stuff one day but for now my energies are better spent on exploration. I know most of you are not geologists but i bet there is at least one or two folks that have experience spotting the fine gems i see here in the rough. So if you find that age has taken its toll or slogging threw the roughest terrain does not appeal to you but the thought of finding a new source does i would be more than happy to share some detailed photos of what i come across for some experienced scrutiny.

P.S here is a link to some garnets i came across 2 years ago

Thanks Much!

There are many albums not just the big and ugly, dont know why photobucket insists on showing that instead of the main page.

hmm well from what i could tell this appeared to be some sort of base garnet material as i found it in the same 200ft area i found the more gemmy well formed stones i posted in the other albums. The "head" (largest one in picture) was entirely formed of this material except what seemed to be a band of quartz on one side with a few of the small well formed stones in it. When i first picked it up i noticed the extreme weight right away. After many attempts to break it open "lord of the flies style" i gave up and took the whole piece. On my way home (was living in Edmonton Alberta at the time) i stopped at the edmonton rock and gem shop and traded it and around 100lbs of matrix n stones for some free cab lessons and a fist full of dollars. So am i out to lunch thinking this is garnet?
