I grow orchids as a hobby

I am hoping that the florist that I have been bugging for a while lives up to his word in that he has live (not cut) orchids arriving next week. I've been trying to find them here for a couple of years, with no luck.

Sigh...I sure miss my Gabonese garden, I was lucky enough to have found an orchid enthusiast/vendor in Libreville and every time we went there, I came back with a few of them to add to the "family".

Canuck,

I live in Pennsylvania, but I grow primarily cattleyas which love my basement and my HPS light in the winter. I just brought upstairs a large plant with 3 huge yellow flowers with red lips. There are 3 more to come !

Got pix?

I think I'd manage to grow cymbidiums in the yard here, if only I could find someone who sells them in this country.

I can post some pics later this week. Does it get cold enough in Cairo for cymbidiums to bloom ??

Winter time it gets to around 10 - 15 degrees Celsius at night. My Mother-in-law has a huge one in a pot in the south of France that thrives. It is about the same climate (granted slightly more extreme up and down over the year, the daily difference is more marked here), so yes, I think it would bloom.

I forgot to leave mine out in the cold this year, so it doesn't look like I'll get any flowers. Maybe in the spring. Right now it's below freezing at night so the cymbidiums have to stay indoors. The cattleyas are realy getting ready to put on their winter show, though.

We had a gorgeous Ascocenda Princess Mikasa Blue, but it died on us. :(

I wish I could grow the vandas and ascocendas here, but it's too much of a hassle to keep them warm and misted, not to mention in enough light.

I know this may sound funny, but my mother actually managed to kill the Mikasa with TOO much heat and light. I told her it needed heat and light, so she put it in a place where it got both... :( I guess I should have told her that 6-8 hours of direct sunlight a day was bad.

She did mist it frequently, right ?

Yep, that's why I don't have vandas or ascocendas. I just water the catts about every ten days, give them plenty of light and fertilizer, and stand back and wait for the flowers.

I had several Vandas in Gabon, where it's humid enough that most of the year all I had to do was hang them from a branch of a tree and wait for them to flower. My favorite was the Tokyo Blue. (and the Sherry Baby oncidium, because that one smells like chocolate :) ) The climate there must be pretty close to their natural habitat.

I have a Sherry Baby oncidium, but it only bloomed once. I gave a division to my sister-in-law, and hers blooms regularly ! Go figure.
