Hi, my name is Reinhardt, although most people know me as Ray, I am the chairman of the South African Gem and Mineral Club in Port Elizabeth. I have been a gemstone enthusiast for the last 11 years. I enjoy many aspects of the hobby including micromounting, mineral collecting, rock hunting, lapidary arts such as cabochon cutting and I'm currently in the process of teaching my self how to facet on my old Lee machine, to date I have managed to turn out 8 stones with varying degrees of success. It has been an interesting journey teaching my self faceting and boy have I hit plenty pot wholes. I always tell people that learning from a book is like driving a car and flowing your GPS device, it will tell you turn left here and in 500 meters turn right but it won't tell you about the pot wholes or the dog that is going to run in front of your car in 3...2...1...

This year I am planning on entering all three categories in our national gem cutting competition that is section A hard stone (quartz and up) section B soft stone (bellow quartz) and the faceting section. My wife and I also plan on entering the Australian Gee Long competition with some of you fellow gem club members.

Hi Ray
How is life in the friendly and windy city?
I am also Ray and live in Cape Town.I know absolutely NOTHING
about gem cutting but,if you get to Cape Town, swing by my place
if you have the time.If you can get to know Duncan Miller, also in
Cape Town,he is a really great gem cutter and also a GO member.
Cheers

PS-There is an active gem society in Cape Town and Duncan
will be able to give you details. They wouldn't let me join,as,
apparently, you need an IQ of 60+ and mine is 43.Maybe I can
run for President of South Africa as Jacob Zuma has only 38!!!!
PS-Don't put this on Tweet/Twitter/Whitter/Whatter etc as the
Security Services may come knocking[bursting open] my door and
lock my wife and friends up[Hmmm-not a bad idea].Anyway, welcome
to GO and trust you have a sense of humour[humor to the Philistines!!!]
Cheers

Thanks CT Ray, things are good here in PE just windy lol. Thanks for the invite I actually want to contact the CT gem and mineral club to encourage them to get their members to enter the comp, I understand they have 3 machines exactly like mine so it would be real fair play. So what is your association to gemology if not lapidary?
