Aloha Everyone
I’m returning to faceting after a 40 year hiatus. When I did it as a kid in Cleveland I was a member of the Heights Gem and Mineral Club (?) and I was about 13. I did lots of cab work, silversmithing and even worked in a retail jeweler repair shop. I noticed all the guys doing faceting were old dudes so I decided to wait until I was old to do it again. Well guess what? Now I’m old. So I got a Ultra Tec VL like I always wanted (I had a Lee Lapidary machine when I was a kid) and now I’m getting back into cutting. So much has changed! I’m basically here to learn and get suggestions from people who know more than I do. I’m a scientist by training and I’m determined to not just cut stones, but cut them well. Look forward to gaining some knowledge here.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
Although I am just a returning noob at faceting, I’m pretty knowledgeable in several other areas like: Tahitian black pearls (I’m expert in both the biochemistry and genetics of pearl nacre), dinosaur bone hunting, and watchmaking. I’m also a chemistry teacher. So hopefully I can give back something in exchange for learning lots here.
Where I live (on Kauai) it’s beautiful, but not much of a lapidary community, so as often the case for anyone who lives a bit remote, I’ll just have to teach myself. There’s probably a lot of people here in the same boat.
Welcome to the family. I'm in the same boat as you. I started cabbing and faceting in the early 70's and gave it up once the children arrived. Now I'm retired and getting back into it. Read and ask questions, everyone is very friendly and helpful.
