Post subject:  Greetings from Afghanistan

Just wanted to drop a note in here and say "hi!" from Jalalabad :)

I've found quite a fun hobby in gemology, hopefully once I get a little more stability i'll be able to purchase some non-travel equipment and learn more about the science!

thanks for the great site,
-nick

Welcome aboard, Nick! Don't let anyone sell you "wooden" gemstones while you're there  .

Thank you all for the warm welcome :)

Hopefully with the help of you all, my trusty set of hanneman filters (among the other "travel" stuff I brought), and a bit of luck, i'll find some interesting (and legitimate) items!

Lucy, I'm continually amazed by the large variety of tourmaline you can find around here, everything from colorless (with and without schorl) to very dark green (and lots in between: pink, light blue, light green, yellow (light and dark), etc, etc). Thanks to the folks at fieldgemology, i've realized that there are a ton of tourmaline mines just up the river :D And it's pretty inexpensive too (I imagine that is owing to the large amount available).

I'll try to check in as frequently as I can w/ pictures of my latest finds :)

thanks again,
-nick
