Hey Folks,

Saturday night i went with 2 gemgeeks (Gennaro Giovatore, aka gennygio and Michele Macrì) to the mineralogical museum of the University of Rome for the presentation of a collection donated to the museum.

Image

The collection was mainly composed by huge geodes of amethyst and citrine plus a number of very nice agates. Ok, many of you have already seen big monster geodes in Tucson, so, nothing really new, however I thought to post a little photographic tour..
Let’s go.

Image

A big citrine geode near the museum entrance.

Image

Amethyst

Image

Agate Slices, there was a plenty of very nice samples

Image

This amethyst geodes is weird, threadlike crystals!

Image

A closeup.

Image

Another big piece donated, a group of fossilized nautiloids from Morocco

Image

A closeup

Image

Another big citrine geodes

Image

That evening was special for ALL the roman museums, they remained open till midnight and in everyone there was groups of classical musicians..

Image
Again amethyst..

Image

And another closeup, this one was really very nice

Image

This is interesting: it’s an early synthetic diamond donated by General Electric to the university more than 50 yrs ago. On the background you can see the core of the press.

Image

The commemorative plate with the sample below (under the lens)

Image

A closeup of the sample, funny, isn’t it?

Image

This is very interesting too. The whole collection of custom shaped stones for the pope’s rings, donated by Pope Leone XII to the university on 1824. On the right and on the left, among the stones there are 2 gold mountings, emerald shaped on the left and oval on the right. Every stone was perfectly shaped to be changed into the mountings.

Image

A closeup of some stones, on top the oval mounting is visible, in the center a very nice imperial topaz, labeled “topazio” (it was far better than in photo, sorry..)

Image

Ready for a pizza…. (from left, Gennaro, Michele and me)

Ciao
alberto

PS: sorry for the low quality of the photos, i had with me the little pocket camera only..

8) Very nice and interesting photographs from the presentation, Alberto!! that's quite a donation to the museum!! i've never seen a citrine geode that large before! wonder if they would allow me to "borrow" the pope's stone collection and ring mountings?? 8) GE made synthetic diamonds?

Gorgeous! Is this a temporary exhibit? I'm not planning to be in Rome until Sept 2010, but Pizze Re for lunch, this exhibit, then the tiny little restaurant that indulges my crap Italian and stuffs me like a Chirstmas goose.

Sounds like a perfect day.

The museum was founded in 1804 by the Pope Pius VII and it’s placed inside of the mineralogical sciences faculty of the university. The new collection will be part of the permanent exhibition.

Image

Minerals displayed are very nice, plus the museum contains a lot of explicative panel and drawings

Image

A nice collection of meteorites too, here’s one of 200 kg found in Somalia.

Image

There is of course even a section dedicated to man made products.. Synth malachite above.

Image

Synthetic quartz…

Image

Lead glass in a crucible…

Image

And, of course some of the earlier apparatus, a couple of old chamber for hydrothermal process here..

i whish i would shot more but, well, i think it's enough for a little tour..

ciao
alberto

Alberto,

Thank you for the tour of the mineralogical museum of the University of Rome.
It was so nice and thoughtful of you to think of all of us and post it on GO.
I took great pleasure looking at all the beautiful minerals, gems and drawings. I wish I could have seen all of it in the flesh....

Best regards,

Lyric
