It is with great sadness I'd like to announce Dr. Hanneman passed away on December 12, 2020. His legacy will live on forever!

The American Society of Appraisers booth is the oldest appraisal society in the country, and the finest you can choose for fulfilling your desire to attain professional appraisal education, and the most prestigious professional titles to go with it.

I want to tell you of an upcoming opportunity to gain accreditation points towards the Accredited Member or Accredited Senior Appraiser designation, as well as fulfilling some of the requirements for certification as a Master Gemologist Appraiser®. That’s the GJ206 class offered June 6-8, right after the JCK show in Las Vegas, on the American Gem Society campus. It’s an intensive class in gems and jewelry appraising, and the best of its kind in a short format.

This year, the guest presenters are Peter Shemonsky, who will provide a “View from the Backside: Handmade or Not?” and John Ternus, opal dealer, on “Lightning Ridge Opal: Rough to Polished” with pictures and samples. Wednesday morning). The course includes a USPAP update and a detailed review of ASA reporting and writing standards with Mona Miller and Gary Smith. On the afternoon of the third day, the Master Gemologist Appraiser® practical examination will be given to first-time and renewing title holders.

For details, please go to You can also contact Nicole Cruz, Education and Accreditation Manager, at, to help you with registering and information about hotel accommodations. Large gemological equipment for the exam can be rented from AGS.

There is no substitute for the personal attention and interaction that professional appraisers enjoy in this class. I hope you will attend! Please email me at if you have any questions.

Scott Gordon, GG, FGA, ASA

More than a jeweler, more than a gemologist: the American Society of Appraisers professional is the Gold Standard in appraising.
