David V. Horste of DVHdesigns will talk about the history of jet, a kind of gem grade lignite coal, and it's use as ornament from ancient times, through its use in the 19th century as traditional mourning jewelry in the Anglosphere. He will also discuss its decline due to simulants, his current work in jet making 21st century mourning beads, the metaphysical attributes of the material, as well as the other stories that this 60 million old mineraloid has to tell.

One focus of David's lecture will be to broach the subject of "what does genuine jet" mean in the context of 21st century gem cutting. Most of what has been written about jet was compiled in the 1920's and 1930's and pertains only to jet from Whitby, England, which was the center of Victorian jet production. Our understanding of earth science and the variability of gemstone identification has changed tremendously in the past 100 years! David will talk about the inconsistencies in describing and determining "what is jet" from the point of view of earth science and modern geological study. New research out of Spain has shed new light on this darkest of all gemstones. As one of the only lapidaries in North America who actually has WORKED with a variety of kinds of jet from around the world, David has a unique perspective and a offers a new definition of what actually constitutes genuine gemstone jet.

David started cutting stones when he was 10 years old and has been a full time lapidary artist since 1992 with a specialty in larger, one of a kind, centerpiece and focal beads, along with some unique, free form cabochons. His current work focuses more and more on working in gemstone jet, reviving the Victorian tradition of genuine jet mourning jewelry to help the bereaved, as well as to promote environmental and energy education.
