If you live in the Bay Area OR can can arrange to be here, this is one of the most important meetings we've had! A must! England's Dr Ogden will deliver one of the most unique, entertaining, and enlightening lectures that we will ever have. It's not the stone, it's the story that makes a piece of jewelry come alive in our hand. Unravelling the history of a piece by it's stones and construction is a fascinating journey. A jewelry historian of Jacks calibre may never come this way again, don't miss it. The Golden Gate Chapter presents
“Lore and Profits” “Tools and Technology: Jewellery Making in a Historical Context” by
Dr. Jack Ogden, Gem-A
On this special evening, Dr. Jack Ogden, chief executive of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A), will take us on a historical journey in his presentation of two subject matters: “Lore and Profits” and “Tools and Technology: Jewellery Making in a Historical Context”.
Don’t miss this opportunity to lose yourself in the magic of gems and marvel at the advancements of jewelry making through the ages. He will explain the jewelry trends and why certain pieces became prevalent during specific times, and how you can date pieces based on their stones, construction and materials.
Dr. Ogden is the fourth generation of a well-known British jewellery business, but after gaining his Gem-A Diploma ('FGA') with distinction in 1971 he worked as a consultant for museums, auction houses, dealers and collectors worldwide, advising them on the history of jewellery materials and technology, with a special focus on problems of authenticity.
Dr. Ogden has written and lectured widely on ancient jewellery and taught courses at The J. Paul Getty Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Institute of Fine Arts (NY) and Institute of Archaeology (London). His 1982 book “Jewellery of the Ancient World” is still the standard work on ancient jewellery technology and he has written numerous other books and articles. In addition, Ogden is a well-respected representative in the global gem and jewelry community. He is vice chairman of the U.K. Government Treasure Valuation Committee, an elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and served as Secretary General to CIBJO - The World Jewellery Confederation (1995-2005). He joined Gem-A in 2004 and is serves as chief executive.
