Hello All,
I don't get over here nearly as much as I should and I mainly lurk. However, I wanted to post this info on this year's Franklin Faceter's Frolic, which will be edition 5.0. I will follow with more info and an updated URL soon. I hope this cut and paste works and apologize if it is not easy to read.
Hope to see many of you there!
Also, you may pre-register for Robt. Strickland's Beginner and Intermediate/Advanced GemCad workshops now by emailing me, but you must include "2012 Gemcad Registration" in the subject line or I can't be sure your email won't be filtered or trashed. The workshop cost is $25, payable in cash only, at the event. Space is limited, so if you plan to come, register early. Send me a sentence or two on your level of Gemcad experience so that I can place you and tell Robert what to expect.

A small addition.
I forgot to add Roger Dery to the dealer list. Roger said he'd be in town for the Gem Shows and would like to come by and set up a table with his famous rough. So add him to the list!
Best, royjohn

Robert Strickland, the originator of GemCad, has been working on an improved version of GemRay for Windows for a while. He has a beta version which he's getting tested by volunteers from the USFG list and he should have a final version ready for purchase soon. Robert has generously included me as a beta tester, but I've been very busy with the Frolic and other projects and haven't even had time to download the beta version and give Robert feedback. He's going to give a talk on this new version of GemRay @ FFF5.0 and I think he'll have a version ready for purchase then, too.
I gather that this program will help optimize gem designs and will supercede Tom Herbst's BOG, but until I have time to work on the beta version or see the completed program, I ought not to say more. You can find out a little more by going to the USFG list and looking at Robert's thread on this.
When I have more info, I'll be sure to post it here. Maybe Robert follows this list and will clarify things himself.
Best, royjohn

Hello All,
In my post about registering for the GemCad workshops, I forgot to include my direct email address, which is hidden on this forum.
The email is <rkersey@tds.net>. When you register, please put "2012 GemCad Registration" in the subject line so that I can parse all the registrations out of my [very large] list of emails.
Thanks, royjohn, aka Roy, aka Roy in Knoxville For the Frolic Program Committee

As I was not able to work it out to be in Franklin for FFF5, I was able to arrange a viewing of Roger's rough in his shop as he was pulling all his goods together. I'm not sure if I was able to see everything he is bringing to Franklin, but what I did see was quite impressive. Quite a variety for sure. Smaller stones to larger stones in several species from Aquamarine, Quartz, Tourmaline, Garnet, Iolite, Scapolite, Sapphire, Zircon, etc, etc, etc. Too many to list. Very nice material I must say. Within each "group" were several colors, ex. Rhodolite, Malaya, Umbalite, Spessartite, Yellow-Golden Grossular, Yelow-Green Grossular / Mints / Tsav. Garnets. Green, Pink and fancy colored Tourmaline, etc..... Should be something for everyone. Some stones are even pre-formed. Thank you Roger for the opportunity to see an example of what you will have available at Franklin,... too bad I can't make it.
