Lecture: Jade! Eternally cherished, yet often confusing Speaker: Dennis Freiburger Friday, May 5, 2017 7:00 P.M. — At the San Francisco Gem and Mineral Society Clubhouse SAN FRANCISCO GEM & MINERAL SOCIETY 4134 Judah Street San Francisco, CA 94122-1125 Quote: It is estimated that jade has been a part of human culture for up to 8,000 years. That said - it wasn’t until 1863 that Alexis Damour discovered that the material known as “Jade” could be divided into two different minerals- Nephrite and Jadeite. In even more modern times, over half of the “jade” our speakermidentifies at “Gem & Mineral Shows” isn’t jade – instead the pieces are numerous manmade imitations or other extensively treated and processed minerals.
Dennis Freiburger is a certified Gemologist and a member of several local mineral and gemology societies. He will sort out history, mineralogy, and modern jade trade practices. Our speaker will offer practical ways to begin identifying what you actually have. Bring your jade. No matter what you have, I guarantee you will better appreciate the beauty and appeal of these famous materials. Robert Kozak |
