It is with profound sadness and shock that I pass along tragic news.
Alain passed away yesterday morning in the Netherlands. He had not been well for some years and opted for suicide.
The selfless contributions he made, not only to our forum, but to the fields of gemology and jewelry history generally are immense.

I don't know what to say. Alain has been one of my online buddies for years, and an occasional companion to go and see some of the more interesting expositions in Paris when schedules and travel days lined up. He gave me a rather amusing practical lesson in how to read a spectroscope in a little bar off the Champs Elysees, the bartender thought we were doing lines of something and kept giving us dirty looks.
I'm deeply upset and sad that he got to the point that life was not worth living for him anymore. He deserved much more than that.

I've been struggling for something to say. Alain I will miss you. You made me laugh. You infuriated me. You were one of a kind. May you find the peace you so longed for.
