dave: got your pm. will see you next year. just came back from guatemala following the route of the maya. no interesting gemstones, some jade but nothing like burmese. the textiles were really nice though and the people were great.
it is amazing how little people can live on and still be happy. I am humbled by the experience. the people reminded me of the thai upcountry. as for the city experience, definitely the have and have nots. the haves are called strawberries, "fresas" - walking around the gated communities with bodyguards, maids walking designer dogs and a caucasian nanny traipsing the kids around the block. i prefer the guatamalan highlands, fresh air, cornfields on the hillside and people living real lives. of course, to them i am probably a strawberry too.
