The Economist has published an interesting piece on rare colored diamonds. Check it out.

Hi Jay,

Thank you so much for sharing.
Very interesting article about very unusual diamonds investment and financial aspect.

Very rare dimonds have always been a pretty good investment especially on the long run. They certainly always defied inflation, were easy to transport, move around and sell in case of need.

It is interesting to me that their prices have increased tremendously in the past 20 years or so, following the increase of wealth of the very wealthy classes compared to the decreasing wealth of the middle classes.
To add fuel to the fire, because we live in a globalized world, the elite of all the different countries is now competing for the same rare items at the same time (greater demand than offer). Some other countries have a healthier economy than we do in the US at this point so they have more money available to buy these high end goods as well.

I can't help but ask the question: does it seem that the middle class is shrinking towards an almost a pre-industrial revolution percentage?
As the repartition of wealth is getting more unbalanced, I think that it is triggering this huge increase of price for the very rare pieces.
Strangely enough the very very high end market seems to be booming while everything else is on the decline.
Large and some fancy colored diamonds certainly fall into this category.
