Post subject:  Name 7 Gems, Win!

Hi All,

This is my first attempt at running a quiz. These are pretty easy but they are inclusion photos. The first person to name all 7 gems by variety wins a copy of Gemology Tools Professional ($59.95, software for the gemologist or gem-o-nut). Note: if you already own GT Pro please refrain from participating (since you could just look them up, anyway). Thanks.

Good luck.

You don't need to name the inclusions (extra bragging rights if you do, however).

2. Sunstone

4. ??
5. Hessonite garnet
6. Zircon
7. ?? (something doubly refractive)

Hi africanuck,

Well, this may be a tad harder than I thought it would be since you were one of my frontrunners based on past performance.

1) No
2) No
3) Yes
4) No
5) Close, but no
6) No
7) No (but your guess at DR is correct).

I'm so ashamed

Am I allowed to continue, or is it one try per person?

Ashamed?? Don't be ridiculous. I'm a GG but when people send me photos I generally rely on them for ID. Looking at a picture (especially of inclusions) is really just a guessing game.

And, yes, fire away. Take as many shots as you want.

O.K., here goes some guessing....

1. Rhodolite (looks much like some needles in some rhodolite I have)
2. Hessonite
3. Demantoid (lovely horsetail)
4. Amethyst
5. Spessartite
6. Tourmaline
7. Zircon

Great quiz Bill! Hope I get something right! -carrie

Gemology Tools Professional is an excellent software program, by the way.
It really encourages a sensible and accurate approach to Gem ID!
Believe me, if I didn't already own a copy of this software, I'd be trying to win it!

I think I have the GTP ... but it's loaded on my mother's computer, since that's what I was using at the time. Any way to reload it to my computer? :smt017

I'm at a complete loss as to what number 2 might be if it isn't Oregon sunstone...

6. Andalusite
7. I want to say peridot, but the stone isn't green. Is it something that has been heat treated?

Post subject:

On #2, the red are phantoms (that might give it away).

6) No
7) No, I don't believe it has been heat treated. A hint here: this particular piece is more of a specimen than a gem, although the variety is a common, well known gem.

2. Quartz with red hematite phantoms?

In thinking about stone 1., I only see intersecting silk/needles described in corundum, garnet and quartz. Is there another stone I should be considering?

2) No, but you are right about them being hematite phantoms.
