Hi Guys,

This is the first gem quiz I've seen since joining the forum, pretty difficult stuff, pretty competitive too.

For your amusement - here goes my best guess:

1 - round red/orange stone
2 - squarish pale blue stone
3 - ugly big brown stone
4 - poor purple stone, somebody scratched
5 - round yellowish/brown stone
6 - square green stone
7 - clear lump - but nice
8 - green/black lumps - like peas in a pod
9 - red stone

I agree with appraisers, very difficult when the stones aren't in your hands, but I think it's even better when the stones are on your hands, nicely faceted and set.

Feel free to ridicule till your heart is satisfied

Love gemmsong

 Hey, I like your analysis, Gemmsong! Thank God I don't think I'll ever see some of the gemstones listed. And if per chance I do, I'm smart enough to say "I don't know" and refer the owner to someone else!

All right ... now that this is over, would everyone who actually named a gemstone/mineral properly, tell the rest of us where you looked up the information? Book titles, web sites, etc. I'd really like to know how you found the far-flung, likely-never-to-be-seen stones. :?

I actually won!! OMG!!

First off, I would like to thank the Academy...and mom...and GTBill...and *chokes on tears* everyone else who made this possible!!

Okay, I would really like to thank eveyone! The quiz is my favorite part of the forum!

I used the search index of Webmineral for the hard ones. You can type in "red uniaxial" and a few pages will come up. It only took 5 hours, as opposed to Bills 5 minutes using his software.

I can't wait to try Gem Tools Pro!!!

thanks again everyone!

almost forgot the link http://www.webmineral.com/cgi-bin/search/search.pl?Match=1&Realm=All&Terms=albite

Gems, Their Sources, Descriptions & Identification, by Webster is a good source, although pricey.

http://mineral.galleries.com/ Is a good source for identification with physical properties

http://webmineral.com/

http://www.mindat.org/index.php

But, long story short, Gemology Tools Professional has a huge data base which would have allowed everyone to make those separations in less than 5 minutes!

PS Congrats Kristina!Image

Actually, I bought GTPro two years ago while I was taking care of my mother after her surgery. But, the program is on her computer and I don't know how to transfer to mine. I asked Bill in another thread and never received an answer. I have no intention on paying for another copy.

Congratulation, lvt! Am I bitter? :x Actually, I'm not ... I'm just extremely tired after being up late last night and quite early this morning getting everything ready for making stock today. My apologies. :D

Congrats, Kristina!

Thank you, Bill, for offering the quiz, your time and your software!

Wow! I certainly didn't learn about these stones through GIA classes-crazy ones, that's for sure!

Maybe my headache will finally go away!
Take care,
Katy B

I find a PM is a better way to communicate one on one as everyone doesn't read every single thread.
