Ok I have this material, I want to make earrings with. I need ID on it and I want to harden it when I'm done. Any ideas on what it is and what to use on it? I can barely scratch it with my fingernail, pics are wet. https://www.dropbox.com/s/i2b8bh8tnsgym81/PhotoArt.jpg
I don't think this qualifies as a contest, but my guess is serpentine. But that's a guess, and in this case not a very good one since there's not too much data to go off of. A rock usually can't be reasonably identified from a photo (in all cases a faceted gem can't). In some cases you get a really distinctive feature that lets it be identified, but that is definitely not the case here, so I'm just judging from the color and softness. As to hardening it, depending on how porous it is it might be possible to soak it in opticon and then apply hardener to the surface as is sometimes done to opals or agates.
