It has been a long time since I have done one of these. The first person to identify the gem I'm thinking of will win a free download of Gemology Tools Professional (a $59.95 value (US dollars)). Clues will come approximately every half hour. There is only one rule (so far, I reserve the right to add rules as we go): Only one gemstone guess per clue given per contestant. If you put 75 gemstones in your answers will not qualify.

Clue #1: This translucent gemstone is pink in color probably about 2 carats in weight. The first thing I have done (besides look at it) is test it for magnetic response using my 1/2"x1/2" round N-52 neodymium magnet. It picks up!

Well, a half hour has come and gone with no replies so I guess I'll wait until someone makes a guess before posting the 2nd clue.

Nice tries. Sorry, I was off napping. Taking pain meds so I probably shouldn't even be doing this. Hope I don't mess it up.

Clue #2: On the polariscope we have determined that the gem is doubly refractive.

Rhodochrosite is a good guess. But, no.

Clue #3: Using Dr. Hanneman's Specific Gravity tester we get an SG of about 3.4

Stephen, you are the only one playing so you'll probably be shoo-in to win. Are you a GT Pro user?

I was out cutting cabs, so I'm glad nobody else got in here first. Welp, the SG/RI combo rules out most of my other guesses. Is it... clinothulite?

Just kidding. How about pink vesuvianite?
