I'm not a Diamond but I sparkle like one
when you look at my back I'm double the fun.
Rarely ever do I come this blue...
and with a hint of violet? Wow! But it's true!
What am i?

(i suspect this is way too easy but oh well! :) )

Benetoite, aka "blue diamond" misnomer.

High dispersion and high birefringence are benchmarks for this blue stone.

All good guesses but it was maialetto who guessed right. I was right...way too easy. This stone is a very very nice very BLUE Zircon weighing a bit over 2 carats.

JB got the dispersion part of the riddle right but the "Double the fun" was a reference to the back facet doubling.

Sigh...i need something really obscure for the next watizzit.

That was a good one Jason. I'm sure you can see how I related birefringence to "back facet doubling" in this case. Would be hard to differentiate zircon from benetoite based on general dispersion and birefringent descriptions along with a picture that would be excellent examples of either one. (except for the dispersion)

I was looking for the less obvious answer. The duck that walks like a duck, but might be a .....

:smt112 back facet doubling is really strong, you can see it from the picture.

It's a very nice blue zircon; I'd have preferred a 2ct. benitoite, btw :) You too, I guess

Jason,

Did the seller have an origin associated with this stone? Just wondering if this material would be from Cambodia as many of the other shades of blue are.
