Originally I was known for protecting my wearer.

My given name can be misleading, it has nothing to do with my species.

I usually work alone but, sometimes I'm forced to work with my peers.

I love the water but, not to hot please.

Hmmmm, I was first thinking about red coral and then maybe pearl. But not sure about the misleading name part. Mother of pearl? That's a wild guess. I may be snooping down the wrong trail.

Sorry folks, I was out for the evening last night. Couldn't respond.

You're making fine guesses but, still not there yet.

One final clue: It's not a good idea to eat gems, but, I may actually be good for you.

The nice things about quizzes are, even if you get it wrong, you learn lots of other good stuff while searching for the answers. :)

Not an easy one.

The first clue would indicate some kind of amulet, which are many .. like amethyst.
The second probably a tradename, like smokey topaz.
3rd could be twinning or an isomorphous series, I think twinning.
4th probably hydrothermal.
Last clue I have no clue about .. maybe a K-feldspar .. potassium is good for you.

Gamble: Amethyst

Excellent reasoning. You almost talked me into it. It's not amethyst though.

In all fairness, each of us may be working with different gem references. Maybe Aesop can help.

P.S. Due to the nature and origin of this gem, it's hard for me to devise clues without practically giving the answer away. Hopefully it will make sense once it's revealed.
