Hi everybody. Let me introduce myself,
My name is janne and I am from Sweden.
I have started to cut stones and successfully managed to cut
A few quarts stones and a topaz. Now I just finished what I thought would be a really nice open color rose garnet. I used a diagram from Jeff graham a round brilliant. The stone turned out awful after I removed the epoxy. It completely blackout the stone, now the crown is pretty high. 42,38,24 is that what make it dark when light hit the stone? In low light the color is stunning but as soon as more light hit it it look dead.
Any thought would be helpful
Thx in advance
Janne

The stone looks like it is windowed as it looks in your first pic. The other pics you have the pavilion blocked so light doesn't pass through the stone. Just my observation based on your provided info.
Greg
There can be many reasons here.

The pics came in reversed order to what I described.
Pic number 2 is viewed from pavilion to show color un reflected

Second picture down looks like we are looking from the pavilion side instead of the crown?

In your pictures, I don't see any "blacking out", just reflections out of the pavilion mains. In fact in the top picture it is quite bright!

Second pic from down is the crown. I just moved my body so the stone came in light as you can see on my hand.
Maybe I just had to much expectation. But non of my other stones behaved like this.
But this is my first garnet.
Stone get very bright when light hit straight in or low light.
But dark and dull when viewed from an angel in light.
Angels are p1-40,5 p3 39.
C1-42 c2- 38 c3-24

These angles are steep, although are fine for higher RI gems or color saturated gems.
I have the question in mind of have you actually no doubt it is a garnet? The color appears more like a tourmaline, possible morganite and a pink topaz. These gems all have lower RI's.
Yes the second pic looks like a windowed gem. And when you tilt the stone or introduce light from an angle the window is not seen, which is what you see when a gem is cut below the critical angles of a gem.

I suspect the same as Greg, If this is not a Garnet then it is probably a bit too shallow at those pavilion angles.

Pic 2 from top is pavilion view, pic 2 from bottom is crown view.
Do you know the species of garnet?
Greg

There is nothing wrong with the stone. For some reason, that I am at a loss to explain, some brilliant cut stones look better in indirect lighting. I have noticed this particularly with Namibian demantoid garnets, which really seem to 'light up' in subdued lighting.

Hi Greg. It’s a rose colored garnet from Tanzania. What blend that is I can not tell.
Thank you Duncan I will keep that in mind on the next garnet.
