I thought this was called a checkerboard top and a buff top was a cabochon top. Am I wrong here?

I thought so to? :D

Not a real fan of checkerboards. I like to look into the stone.

Found this at Gem Select. Beautiful stone, but I never knew this color in quartz to be natural. A new find? Looks more like Fire Opal, could it be a mistake?

I've purchased many stones from gemselect. By and large they seem to be committed to disclosing treatments, although in practice they often fall short. :) I've purchased lemon quartz from them before (I believe Barbra has posted a picture of it), and I'd bet substantial portions of my anatomy that it's treated (I don't recall off-hand the treatment mode for lemon quartz).

Also, they seem to "forget" at times to disclose Be-treatment, sometimes listing stones as "just" diffused or heated. Also, I've run into one or two sapphires that were labeled unheated but had CLEARLY been heated.

Still, at the prices that they often sell for, I'm pleased with almost all the stones I've bought from them. Bottom line, assume everything they sell has been treated, and you'll be pleasantly surprised sometimes, but you'll never be blindsided. ;)

NOTE: I was confused, I had done business with gemsdeluxe, not gemselect. See post below.

Was your lemon quartz that saturated of a yellow color? I don't recall seeing quartz this yellow, but I'm far from seeing everything in the world of gems.

It was not that saturated, and there's a picture of it in this thread:

http://gemologyonline.com/Forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1229

Although, it WAS more saturated than it appears in this photo (dim lighting).

Ignore what I said above about doing business with them though, as I did business with gemsdeluxe, not gemselect...

Heh, all these Thai sellers are starting to meld together in my head. :)

That being said, gemsdeluxe has changed their name to stonecheckout and has both an ebay store and a website, but the eBay deals are usually where the bargains are.

The selection at 'Select' looks outlandish... who knows? On the other hand, I get to see these large yellow to golden yellow cabs of something called 'African Opal' or otherwise opal. BIG, and cheap to the point that it doesnt matter what it is. There is some on Ebay too.

Whatever produced the psychedelic picture of the round stone, looks a bit too transparent and that would have required allot of work to fake for no good reason, so I'd take it for granted that it is fairly clean. Why would they need to torment pictures that way...

Quartz sounds just fine for it.

Just an idea.

I sure don't know, but the stone seems to have a bit of that fire opal haze to it ever so slightly. If there is untreated quartz this color, I would be very interested, but I have not even seen heated quartz this yellow.

Who knows? :)

Though not the largest or most beautiful untreated blue sapphire I've seen for sale, this stone is still a respectable size, nice color & seems to be cut fairly well. There is someting either on the stone or in it on the bottom right, but for the collector on a budget this would be a nice stone in their collection.

Nice medium light violetish blue color with superior color saturation. Unheated sapphires like this one are typically worth 25 percent more than similar stones which have been heat enhanced. A complimetary AIGS mini certificate is included with the purchase of this stone.

Many of the stones I've put on this thread are quite beyond the budget of the averge Joe collector, such as my self. In the next several of my posts I'm going to put up affordable gemstones that don't sacrifice beauty for price. In the long run some of these stones may well be better investments (I use that term loosely) per carat than the huge premimums you pay for top end specie stones such as Alexandrite, Pariaba, Ruby, Colored Diamonds, etc. Especially when you consider what you'd pay retail for the same stone like the one below.

Here is a beautiful green tourmaline of large size from www.multicolour.com.

Image

Reference # : YTM454aa
Color Description : medium dark yellowish green 6/4
: medium dark yellowish green

Clarity : Eye clean
Image Light Source : Cool Daylight
Shape : Oval
Cut : Step Cut
Length (MM) : 15.10
Width (MM) : 11.40
Depth (MM) : 9.90
Weight (CTS) : 11.06
Enhancement : (N) None
Origin : Mozambique

Please note that price and description for 1 pce and you can only buy 1 piece.

OUR PRICE USD 663.60

Too many native step cut ovals lately here.... here is an oval that's a bit different. Diamond checker crown.

This one is a 3.14 ct. Rubellite Tourmaline from Nigeria
