So the GIA grades and emerald by color, regardless of whether it has Cr or V. This one is dyed so no telling what color it is underneath. Could I take some of the 25 pound+ light green/white beryls I dug up here in GA or the 100+ pounders my buddy dug from the Hogg mine as well...dye them green.... then put facets on them and try to sell them for a cool million?

Probably it was a childish voice asking for Seymour Butz...
Anyway, it seems he's been arrested for fraud. Maybe if he hadn't developed such a hype around the stone he would have been able to go ahead unnoticed (but the potential price of the "gem" would have been much lower as well). In the end: no sale, plus arrest. Bummer!

Despite his arrest, the auction went ahead, however, not one bid was received.
The fraud charges were not the only controversy to dog Reaney and his emerald.
Although it received a favourable appraisal by Jeff Nechka of Premier Gems in Calgary, other experts remained skeptical, claiming it was nothing more than dyed white beryl.
"There is colour in there but the dye enhanced it to make it an even colour throughout," claims Reaney.
(However, the eBay auction linked above states the only treatment was "oil".)
