I just got back from another trip to Bogota, where I again checked out the emerald shops downtown in my free time. I became a little jaded looking at all the emeralds so I started searching out the more unusual stones, like trapiche and cat's emeralds when I found some unusual blue stones that I had never seen before. These were euclase (or "blueberries" as the dealers call them), with the better ones priced around $1000 to $1500/ct. Many were very dark, but I found a very pretty little 0.52ct greenish-blue stone that I purchased. After inquiring at another shop, a friend of the owner brought over a large euclase specimen about the size of a grapefruit and chock-full of gemmy crystals. It was too much for my budget and I'm not really a specimen collector, but I did buy a few small crystals for fun.
