I have come across a few faceted calcite specimens recently, high transparency, good cutting, with relatively big size that are nice for pendant or brooch.

Wanna buy them, but I never have experience of using this mineral in jewelry design and making. Is it difficult to set faceted calcite gems into jewelry? any particular type of metal and setting style that suit this soft & brittle mineral better? Are there any special issues that one needs to pay attention to during the stone setting process?

AND...how to do the care & maintenance afterwards? (is it similar to pearl care tips? well...they seem to be kinda chemically related :?: )

Apologize for asking series of questions at one go...Many thanks in advance :-)

Regards,
WClee

It would be nearly impossible to set a calcite into any sort of jewelry and then wear it. A good analogy would be in trying to set and wear a potato chip. Just the act of putting it down on a table top could easily chip the stone, (remember that prongs act as stress concentrators when they are impacted). If you just wanted to set the piece for display, you could probably coat the stone with some shellac and then electroform a bezel in place.

Indeed, the prong setting stress was the first concern I had when considering this specimen. Many thanks. I guess the specimens are better to be just staying in the rack if I purchased them haha..

Facetted calcite is purely a collector's stone, and utterly unsuitable for jewelry, the only exception being cabochons.

Wipe with a soft cloth after handling, or handle with gloves.
