I read the postings here & the opinions are good both sides of the argument. For those who collect just to own & oogle over the stones all well & good but as said, u usually cant get insurance if u are really wanting to keep about what u have, most companies will replace as close as to what u had lost, some will cash out, my choice was to wear & enjoy the few stones I have, so they are mounted in the simplist gold setting I conjured up. I know a few people in the entertainment industry who buy loose stones, as an investment & keep them in their safe at home, well secured. These stones that were bought from the same fellow who sold me my stones, only much smaller & less of them, but the wife & I wear what we have. They are all appraised, but mainly for ID purposes of the material, so I know they are as listed. To the people who are afraid of damaging the stones put into jewelry, one has to shop for a jeweler they can trust to handle their stones safely & who is aware of the materials characteristics. I like to show & tell, so Ive posted a few of the pendents we wear on a daily routine, the gem silica not shown here is worn daily by #1, this is her favorite, bar none! :smt055 .. :smt099 .. :smt116..steve...

Very cool collection Steve! May I ask, what are the two big blob looking stones in the middle? It's hard to see on my phone! Thanks :)

dstojan, I think u are referring to the 2 jadeite pieces, 1 is apple green & the other is colorless jadeite, both reported to b burmese, nice representations of the material-steve... :)

Robin, saw ur post about inclusions & I agree with u about them, that is 1 reason some of my stones are considered not top quality or avg. because I like seeing some inclusions within the stone, especially ones that help ID the material the inclusion is usually associated with, as horsetails in russian demantoid, lillypad inclusions in peridot, & octahedral inclusions in red spinel & so on. These are an important part of the stone & should not take away from the value unless some of these are too much within the stone & detract overall-steve... :smt065... 8)

The way I see it, there are two kinds of value. Monetary value and value of interest. Included stones may fall under the second category, but never the first. Monetary value is set by the demands of the consumer, and not many people would want a piece of jewelry with an included gem in it, that's what people settle for when their budget is low. So as far as monetary value, I have to disagree, included stones should have less value, as per the demands of the consumer.

Everything is a question of context, Robin. There are certainly examples of gems where inclusions add to the value, but we had a whole thread about this a few months back, complete with Pink Panther references and everything.

It was a bit of a diversion in this previous Steve gem thread: http://www.gemologyonline.com/Forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=20111

Ill let this post drop, Im seeing many opinions, professional & non & even appraisers being certified by GIA have their own opinions as lawyers, to explain what is good for gems & not. Still a debatible topic good for discussion, at times-steve... =D> =D> ..to all.
