Hi noob here.

I found these in central New Mexico in an area full of sandstone boulders (I was climbing).

Can anyone please help identify the rock/gem type?

These are likely chert/flint or a similar cryptocrystalline quartz. Not super rarer but they could be cut en cabochkn and would take a bright polish.

I agree, polishes to an extreme glassy finish. Although not much for color unless you can separate some areas where you will get a marbling like look. Polishes quite easy with normal cabbing technics.
