Hi Luciano,
i'm almost sure it's a Verneuil flame fusion cracked by heating and suddenly cooling. Honeycomb veils pattern is clearly visible.
just my 2c

Looks like a synthetic flux ruby to me due to the reticulated nature of the veils.
Hi Mimi,
it's unusual for me to be sure about a gem id looking only to a picture but THIS time i repectfully disagree.
those honeycomb veils pattern it's the smoking gun of a flame fusion Verneuil heated and suddenly cooled in order to created crack veils which are SIMILAR to flux veils but are not.
i saw hundreds of blue sapphires - Rubies showing EXACTLY the same pattern.

Hello,
Sorry for my may be naive question but what is the interest to heat a Verneuil to make it look like a flux ruby? Both are synthetics and both characteristics did clearly identify them as being synthetic.

Hi,
the original intent is to change cheap CLEAR flame fusion synthetic (Czochralski or Verneuil is the same) into something more similar to its natural counterpart.
besides its typical apparence, this material is quite easy to ID by a trained gemologist, nothing comparing to some flux synth, more difficult to ID

Hi Ravirus,
It is true that there are a lot of synthetic verneuil quench crackled goods on the market, as I have seen them.
These synthetic stones are quench crackled and subsequently heated with fluxing agents to induce healing along the fractures, thus appearing more like a natural heat treated ruby.
However I am not sure which photo is was that showed the curved striae or tiny gas bubbles that indicated this (verneuil origin) to you.
It would be interesting if Luciano could perhaps examine the ruby from various angles to see the banding or any bubbles.
Otherwise it might be a good idea to have a laboratory look at this gem just to be really cautious.
At the end of the day this forum is a good outlet for ideas to share about the possibilities of treatments and to promote discussion in this area.

there's no pic with curved striae posted by Luciano. i'm so sure cos, as said, i've seen MANY IDENTICAL stones with the SAME honeycomb pattern and EVERY stone was a flame fusion cracked. NEVER saw a flux with the same pattern.

He's a friend of mine (i took him to this forum) and we live in the same city. If the stone is still in his hands i could take a more deeper look and maybe take a shot and post here.

Mimi:
thank you but the pic isn't so good. despite the apparence it was not so easy to set up the right view angle. however the striae was definitely more clear in darkfield than in immersion.
Luciano:
thank you i'll take it as a compliment.

one time you said you want come to Rome.... i'm waiting for you with open arms...
