I found this amethyst in my backyard in Washington DC. It was about 10 feet below the surface. There are both "copper balls" and "jellyfish" inclusions and I think most the jellyfish are on the same plane (but not all). Any idea?? I know that a post with similar inclusions in amethyst resulted in no answers.

In case the OFF! test fails...

I am afraid I do not have a very good answer (hematite comes to mind...). If no one else comes up with one, the forum at Mindat, or Washington Minerals and their correspondents might. [Oops! if you asked already, I couldn't know...]

What you appear to have is an agate with amethyst. Reminds me a lot of Amethyst Sage Agate with the dendrites and such in it.

May be hematite, may be columbite, may be a lot of things really ;)

Kohn Koivula has a few shots in his second photoatlas that resemble your image, he lists the above two minerals as the perpetrators.

Some of the weird shapes columbite can assume was my first thought as well.

But one can certainly not verify that without sophisticated testing.

Whatever it is, it's way cool. But then again I'm a inclusion addict :D

Thanks for the comments. I guess I can assume the "balls" constitute a different mineral than the "things with tails". Not sure if this might be a factor, but I know the groundwater in which the amethyst was found is heavy with manganese.

Any chance of taking it to a local university and talk to the geology department?

It's an amethyst crystal - not agate
