Greetings from Bonnie Scotland to all,

I have been a little bit busy this end and am now delighted to announce the launch of a new UK based Association dedicated exclusively to the truly independent jewellery valuer / appraiser.
AIJV - The Association of Independent Jewellery Valuers

http://www.independent-jewellery-valuers.org

This is a not-for-profit organisation so member numbers are not an issue that drives us, however, I am keen to hear from Independents from all countries as I am keen to demonstrate the international nature of the organisation. The site will eventually be available in English, Italian, German and French and member's profiles will be in their native tongue.

I am also initially very keen to establish a connection with the Gemmological Associations of various countries that have diploma courses to Fellowship level. One of the criteria for membership is that valuers/appraisers must hold such qualifications.

It is extremely early days, the website has only been live for a matter of hours but I have been comforted by the many messages of support indicating that there is a need for such an organisation.

I believe it is the only association of its type in the world (but would like to be corrected on this, if I am wrong in thinking this).

Kind regards to all

Adrian

I believe there is a desperate need for an independent, non-profit appraisal organization.
I wish you success.

Hi Barbra

You are so right, particularly here in the UK.

There are several issues involved of course, but the one that makes me fizz is how the term "Independent Valuer" has been so overused in the wrong context, the public and the retailers no longer understand what it actually means. There has been a gradual, but steady, erosion of its understanding over the years with "Independent Jewellery Valuer" being used by valuers that also have websites selling jewellery, or are down the auctions every month buying and selling or in one case I know actually owning a retail jewellery store.

"Independent of what?" is my usual question. :)

If retailers are to have any faith in using a trade valuer, they need to be sure that they are not using an out-worker who in reality it his competition!

You can no longer really tell who is a Jewellery Valuer and who is a truly Independent Jewellery Valuer any more in the UK. It is not that one is better than the other necessarily (there is good and bad in both camps I am sure), its a case of "can we just get the labelling right please".

I have been greatly encouraged by the amount of folk enquiring about membership. I intend to make membership intimate, fun and very very dynamic. The membership levels (3) are scaled in a way that is unique. Encouraging promotion of your own business, the association and the industry as a whole.

In normal Associations, the benefits to the majority are paid for in cash by the members or created by the minority.
My system is much fairer I think, the benefits for the individual members are created by the individual. The more you help your own business the more benefits you get from the Association.

Neat eh?

Sorry for the rambling

Kind regards to all

Adrian

At the risk of rather over doing this thread.

The AIJV now has a blog. Nothing unusual there then but............
all members have author rights so can post their own blogs on jewellery and its valuation, gemmology, fun stuff etc AND we have guest authors lined up too for the odd article here and there. Antionette Matlins, Renee Newman and Dave Atlas for starters.

Should be a lively blog with a good range of aspects and topics

Just to let you all know that the AIJV website is now available in French (just a few pages on the U.S. server to do). :D

As a result, applications from French speaking Canadians are now invited.

Happy New Year to you all. I look forward to meeting up with some of you in Tucson.

Kind regards
Adrian

The blog is interesting and I've already linked to some articles, but sorry, the Facebook thing is starting to wear very thin with me. I don't even bother to log into Facebook anymore. Hate it.

Hi Barbra

Yes, I know what you mean, it is not everyone's idea of having a good time  But to my astonishment there are folk out there that rely on Facebook to provide their window into the world and are extremely active. Some produce some wonderful tid-bits.

AIJV is also on Twitter...... now there is something that I just cannot get a handle on :?
None the less, we have a presence as some folk are into it in a big way.

Horses for courses I suppose...... Viva la difference!!

Kind regards
Adrian
