Hi Madeline and welcome to the forum.
I think you'll be able to breeze through the GemID portion of the course as you are used to working with instruments involving deductive reasoning with your Geology background.
It has been my experience that what takes the greatest amount of time with the distance education, is the sending back and forth of specimens for testing. If you're not working, you can usually do a couple lessons a day, sometimes more if you have the proper mindset.

the GIA even shows scheduled lab times/locations for the distance learners in many different geographic regions. as Barbra said, they are very accommodating to the student.
