It is with great sadness I'd like to announce Dr. Hanneman passed away on December 12, 2020. His legacy will live on forever!

Hi all,

Brian and I decided to bundle the Saturday and Sunday chats into one. The oncoming weeks will feature one hour chats starting at 12.30 PDT, 14.30 CDT, 15.30 EDT and 21.30 CEST (so Frank will have the kids to bed  ) on Sundays.

Half an hour of basic gemology which will be followed by the physics behind that subject. I think it'll be an interesting set of chats.

Topics (up for discussion)

Basic understandings of mineralogy:

- Crystallization
- Crystal structure
- Habit and form
- Hardness & toughness
- Chromophores
- Transparency

Then onto gemological applications/gem ID explained

- Density
- Refraction
- Spectra
- Inclusions

When it seems useful to change these subjects, add more of them or to dive deeper into a certain one there is room for adaptation. We're easy.

Oncoming Sunday:

Crystallization.

Thank you. I'll probably try to set it up in Trillan with the coordinates listed on the chat homepage.

See you then.

Hah Valeria, you are the diligent student! I think Tim has some reading to do. Myself, I just read the title and think about it while I'm mowing the lawn. Anyone else is welcome to participate, well-read or not.

So come join us. Additional points of view are always valuable.

And just a reminder... we are going to do this on this upcoming Sunday.

And by the way, I usually check in a half hour ahead of time. If anyone wants to talk about anything, especially stuff that doesn't end up in the transcripts, that is a good time. Of course I'm assuming that someone will actually record the transcripts, and that Barbra will bother to post them. So no guarantees your words will be immortalized on the wayback machine (if only we all had that assurance!).

By the way, tomorrow is the Ky Derby, and we have a party planned ... yah, and to Tim: don't expect me to be letter--perfect :

ciao ciao

I am still reeling from the polo horses death, how tragic.

A good first chat. Tim tells me he has an hour's worth of questions for next Sunday. So we shall see!
