thank you very much.

Does anyone know the precise steps involved in this process.
I have a slight overview here:

But if you want to start brewing this up in the kitchen, where would you start? :smt017 A friend and I used to carbonize opals when I was in college. I have a vague memory of sugar solution on the stove, but I'm totally fuzzy on the actual details.

I'm assuming you were cooking Andamooka matrix? Here's a FAQ on that method: http://www.shed.com/aom/storyfile/matrix.html.

As for dying chalcedony... I haven't been able to find explicit instructions yet, but I did find this page which claims that there is a simple test for dyed blue chalcedony... scroll down to the part labeled "Dyeing": http://www.emporia.edu/earthsci/amber/go340/treat.
