You can actually see the doubling of the facets in this photo. It is my understanding that moissanite is usually cut so that the double facets cannot be seen table up - so perhaps this is one of the older cut stones?

That's right; a secondary reason would be to hide the potentially marring microtubules, which form subparallel to the c-axis. However, even when they're cut correctly, a very slight tilt is enough to produce back facet doubling.

Hi Snizzy,

Fascinating indeed, a synthetic moisanite face up showing doubling of back facets.? Just great. Normally this would be more prominent from a tilt and viewed through the kite facets...but.. !

The picture even shows the reflection of girdle if you concentrate enough in the centre gives a doubling outline !! Cool. :P
