Hey All --

Quite a while back I purchased synthetic corundum from a seller who claimed it was Chatham (spelled correctly). There are purples, reds, pinks, orange, and alexandrite. I've read through a previous post (here), but there is no information on how to tell if a synthetic is indeed a Chatham. Does anyone here know if there is a way to tell? Some of them could use a re-cut, but otherwise are gorgeous, and I'd like to offer some for sale, but don't want to say they're Chatham without knowing for sure. Is there really much difference in prices, anyway? Any help would be appreciated :D .

Tom Chatham is a friendly sort -- I've chatted with him a number of times at gem shows. Why don't you go to the Chatham site and ask your question directly? I'm sure he or his staff would help on any gemological issues. http://www.chatham.com/Contact_Us.php

Let us know what you find out.

Genuine Chathums are much more expensive than other synthetics.
Here in Thailand the Thai word for 'synthetic' is 'Chatum'
Best regards, Lee

Oh ... did you want to know what they said? 8)

"Unfortunately there is no easy way to tell if the stones are Chatham or not.

It’s easier to identify them as not being Chatham. You should look for characteristics found in flame fusion or Hydrothermally grown stones which are not our production. Those are much easier to identify as NOT Chatham.

Any gemologist should be able to correctly identify the stones for you."

Since I'm "any gemologist", I'd better get to studying these things :P

Truth be told, I took my microscope down to use the table for something else and I've been too lazy to put it back together  . Guess I'd better get back with the program! 8)
