Hi All,

I've just spent much of the morning grabbing still shots from the hour long "Synthetics" episode of the 7-hour Canadian Discovery Channel precious stone TV series "Stones of Fate & Fortune," broadcast beginning in 2002 or 3, and of which - let me hasten to add :) - I was the originator and lead researcher. This in preparation of a web site via which the whole series will be presented and yes indeed offered for sale. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile though I thought you folks might be interested in these still shots from a shoot at the J.O. Crystal Company in Long Beach California where Judith Osmer and Virginia Carter were at that time producing Ramaura flux-grown rubies.

The platinum crucible comes out of the furnace.

(OK It looks like I'll have to do this in two posts to get all the pictures in...part II coming right up)...

Hi All,

(Recapping) I've just spent much of the morning grabbing still shots from the hour long "Synthetics" episode of the 7-hour Canadian Discovery Channel precious stone TV series "Stones of Fate & Fortune," broadcast beginning in 2002 or 3, and of which - let me hasten to add :) - I was the originator and lead researcher. This in preparation of a web site via which the whole series will be presented and yes indeed offered for sale. Stay tuned.

This is part II of a series of still shots from a shoot at the J.O. Crystal Company in Long Beach California where Judith Osmer and Virginia Carter were at that time producing Ramaura flux-grown rubies.

Fresh from the furnace the crystals are still somewhat flux encrusted

Finally, after cleaning with nitric and other acids, they look like this

And like this... If I recall correctly this one was so clean and esthetic
that it was presented as a crystal specimen rather than sliced up for faceting. A similar albeit much smaller crystal is among my own treasured possessions.

Thanks Hans,

And a big thankyou for the entire 'Fate and Fortune' series. I have them all on VHS tape but a decent quality DVD with no ads would make a nice replacement. Looking forward to the site link.

Tony.

Goodness, those are just beautiful. I bid a couple years ago for some rather smaller multi-crystal (<1cm each) ramaura specimens on pee-bay, and got out bid after a couple hundred bux. Bummer. Still want at least one :)

maybe when my cash flow recovers.... or is rather resurrected like a zombie from the dead.

Any update on the series being offered for sale? A quick search via google only brought up a single DVD of the episode on ammolite. :(
