Cool, I rarely venture into this sub-board!

I'm trying to find a publication, but I'm really bad at doing that. Can someone help me find a publication by Kurt Nassau, either in 1980 or 1984, where he describes taking synthetic rutile and heating it? Apparently, heating brown synthetic rutile over 1,000C in an oxidizing environment turns it yellow, then clear, while doing the same thing in an oxidizing environment turns it blue.

I'd like to take a look at what the article actually says, though, before I try any of this heating. I can't seem to find it at all.

Thanks!

There is mention of this procedure on page 212 of Nassau's 1980 edition of Gems Made By Man.

I found it so fast because I know how to use the index in the back of the book  . I'm not sure if the book is available on any of the "free" sites. Perhaps someone else knows.

The book is still subject of copyright laws. I guess it should not be published online. My suggestion is to try to find a copy for the bookshelf.

First place I look for books is Amazon. You won't like the new price, 235 USD, but there are used ones available for 40.

I ran across the public beta of a new website, gemdat.org. Their listing for rutile mentions the color change and cites Nassau, though the citations seem to be incomplete. Maybe that's why it's a beta.

I don't know if all the used books have the problem mine do: The glue on the binding is crumbling. The first 50 pages or so on my first copy have pulled loose, although they are still attached. My second copy is still fairly tight, but the glue is crumbling, as well. Wonder what it would cost to have them re-bound (or re-binded, or whatever it is  )?

Arya, I didn't even think of the first thing I would have done when I was in school. Go to the library and talk to a research librarian. That's what they're there for, and the biggest complaint I've heard from librarians is that they're underused.

Al, what a great idea! All the school librarians I've worked with have been most interested in helping me track down and acquire books, articles... no matter what the field/topic.
