Hey everyone. I just wanted to say I got a few pieces of neodymium-doped YAG and it is the coolest. For those not familiar with the material, it is a brilliant slightly purplish-pink color in sunlight, like looking down the backlit C-Axis of a nice kunzite. In fluorescent light, it is dead colorless. Seriously it is really cool. I have a few pictures and a video where I turn a fluorescent lamp off and on. It also goes a more blueish-purple color under some LED lighting. It's particularly nice because these are all things I've seen in real-world lighting conditions, not things that had to be coaxed out in a closet with a flashlight or candle.
Probably something that's been examined, but I wonder if it could work by a similar mechanism to Bruce's Laurellites?
Anyway, the pictures!

I don't know why but I'm having a lot of fun with this stuff. Showing it off around the geology buildings at UNC and NCSU has gotten good reactions too.

My single crystal laser grade Nd:YAG from Northrop Grumman has a similiar but weaker CC.
In flourescent light, it still looks a little pinkish. Maybe it depends on the amount of Nd?

Photo was shot with an overhead LED light bar and oriented to show the dispersion.
