That sort of spherical acicular (I know there's a better term but I can't think of it) growth can happen in a lot of contexts. It is certainly typical of human-induced devitrification by slow cooling of glass but you can absolutely get it in natural stones as well. An obvious example is gilalite in quartz (or "mesusa quartz") or rutile in quartz in some particular circumstances.
