I got this color change glass, and it's quite surprising. The color change green-to-reddish purple is really neat, sharp, and it behaves the opposite of my (synthetic) alexandrite: it gets green in sunlight, and purple in fluorescent light.
The absorption spectrum (visible light) is quite funny: it absorbs the far red end, it has three lines absorbing most of the violet and a band in the green yellow. All bands are really super-sharp.
I know there were some "tourmalike" glass for sale around which looked somehow similar. Does it have the same color change characteristics? i.e. hot color in cold light?

The "Tourmalike" laser glass I've seen is pink in incandescent and blue-green in fluorescent light.

Hmmm, thank you Al. I checked with some light sources around and the spectroscope, and apparently it gets purple with fluorescent light only. The LED's around have a continuous spectrum and the color results more or less green. The light from the fluorescent lamps has the "typical" banded spectrum, with 4 main lines. This glass completely absorbs the ones in the green and blue regions, letting violet and red pass. Basically to see the purple you need a rather specific banded spectrum. Somehow disappointing, but fun...
