I would like to buy a book which covers in depth ancient jewellery ( lots good photos is a must) and one book about professional appraisal.

searched sites:

Amazon.com
Gemology Online Book Shop
www.langantiques.com

I think I will get :
7000 Years of Jewelry: An International History and Illustrated Survey from the Collections of the British Museum.
ANY OTHER BOOK which I missed..?

Appraisal book :

llustrated Guide to Jewelry Appraising, 3rd Edition: Antique, Period, and Modern (Hardcover) Anna M. Miller

I am not to convinced about this book as I read in Amazon , there are some discrepancies between editions.

thanks!

Get Jack Ogden's book: Jewellery of the Ancient World: ISBN 9780847804443

the 7000 years thing is a nice overview which you can pick up for cheap at amazon but it will not be an indepth study of ancient jewellery like Ogden's work. While you are at it you may as well buy a thin booklet by Ogden on the interpretation of observations.

On appraising:

not my turf, I'll be looking out to the responses you will be getting, half interested in a good handbook as well.

Tim I definitely followed your advice, I have ordered Ogden's book and the booklet (That was my second choice...)
I hope we get some feedback from members of our forum about the second book I am looking for. (and you may be too)
Just in case , I have asked some appraisers outside the forum.
A soon as I get an answer I will share it with you!

Thanks Tim!

Appraising is kind of an art and depends on your location in my opinion. What I can sell a gemstone for here is going to vary considerably from what they will sell for in NYC or LAX. I know there are some wholesale price guides out there that some stores use but the prices do vary widely.

thank you Jim, you are right location , location ....
I am interesting in learning what is the value of for example : a pair of deco diamond earrings, , a garnet ring from the 6 century, or spanish alhambra time jewels ( which I have seen some)
That sort of thing is most interesting for me.
I had wrote a couple of museums, and apraissees, I will gather the information I get and make it public.

Hi Lourdes,
There are a couple of Appraisal books that I can recommend.
The Anna Miller Book - Gems and Jewelry Appraising, Techniques of Professional Practice has been just updated and expanded by Gail Brett Levine and it is a great resource. Also, The Practical Guide to Jewelry Appraising by Cos Altobelli would be a wonderful edition to your library.

If you find that appraising is something that you might truly enjoy, consider becoming a member of an organization like NAJA.

Best wishes,
Katy B

I agree with Tim, Ogden's book is one of the few with practical tips on identification.
