The book titled "Understanding Jewellery" by Bennett and Mascetti is a great book. It has depth, continuity, good pictures and coherent, expert narrative. The only problem is the goods are so high-end I may never see many pieces like them
I need the same quality book showing more middle of the road items-decent quality karat gold jewelry with decent quality and commercial quality gems.
(A personal bias: I can't stand costume jewelry. If it isn't silver/gold/platinum I can't relate.)

Understanding Jewellery is mandatory reading at Lang Antiques! Another book which you might find really useful is: Christie Romero was an icon of authority in vintage and antique jewellery.
Hello, due to your recommendation, I've been looking for the Warmans book on line. There is another newer edition available as you are probably aware. (I live in UK so not sure I would be able to find either or both editions in an average shop). Would you say either one is better than the other? Thank you. Lee
