Only parts of the proof. I've got a copy of it waiting for me in Bangkok the next time I get there, which should be soon. So more to follow once I've got it in hand.

Dick's wife Wimon and his daughter Billie are also credited as co-authors.

As I understand it, it will offically debut at Tucson, so any of you who are going, keep an eye out for it.

Any one see this (Ruby & Sapphire: A Collector's Guide) at Tucson...or elsewhere?

I had originally understood that Hughes was working on an update to his Ruby & Sapphire book published about 1997. But this one appears to be somewhat different.

If anyone has seen both, I'd be interested any comments about how they differ.

Many Thanks!

I have a copy, here at work.
I don't know how it compares to the '97 book, but I can say that this is a very well made tour of corundum throughout the world. It's conversational (could you not have guessed?) so it's a palatable read. Very engaging photography, very informative.
There are other, recent photo/gemo books that are more $$ and not as impressive.
For 164 shipped, it's really great.

The new book is not a technical treatise like Ruby and Sapphire is and therefore is a lot more "accessible" to non-gemmos.

You can get a look at a couple of pages per chapter on the order form page for the book on Dick's new Lotus Gemology website : http://www.lotusgemology.com/index.php/library/books/278-ruby-sapphire-a-collector-s-guide-order-page.

Thanks for your input!

Also noted that there is now a link to Wise's review on a different thread under this Collecting Gem & Jewelry Books topic area. All very helpful.

Know what birthday present I'll be asking for this year!

Is it really $65 for shipping and handling for a $99 book, as the website shows?

Seems all out of sync with S/H charges I pay for other items shipped from Thailand>

Sadly, yes it is. The book is quite heavy and we charge the shipping at cost, averaged over regions of the world, along with the cost of packaging. It is shipped by the Thai Postal Service and rates can be checked online. Shipping weight is approximately 2.6 kg. I wish we had a cheaper way to ship, but we don't. We researched all the various carriers (FedEx, UPS, DHL) and this is the cheapest.
