In the past, I have raved about a book that is no longer in print that was available through the DDemG in Idar Oberstein. It was a hardbound green book with the most complete set of gemstone tables I had ever seen. I still use it to this day, even though it is 20 years old and seriously out of date.

I have recently had the opportunity to review a new book,Tables of Gemstone Identification, by Roger Dedeyne & Ivo Quintens that is in many ways superior to my old favorite. Not the least of which, it is totally current, published in 2007.
This new book is extremely well organized, containing tables listing gems alphabetically, by refractive index, by specific gravity, by by spectra. The section on absorption spectra features full color illustrations that are some of the finest I've seen! The quantity of gems described is astonishing (several hundred), with natural, synthetic and artificial products included.

There are some additional sections that are indeed useful. Included is a section on glass relating its refractive index to a diagnostic specific gravity, a section of the Garnet Family (one of our favorite topics) and finally a section on diamond imitations listing all isotropic and anisotropic possibilities with identifying characteristics.
Excellent!
Highly recommended.
