sure, the one who sold it to you might be the one that was fooled in he first place.

I find that is most often the case.

Often, people aren't trying to intentionally be deceptively fraudulent ( ), they are just misinformed or have made some erroneous assumptions.

Gap between expected and observed RI looks unbridgeable. Optical character and sign? FWIW (not too much, I guess) I'm with Cascaiallou on this one.

UV illumination is not likely to give a reliable indicator. A check of SG may or may not give you another good indicator - but worth trying anyway?

All this consideration about this stone... If your RI is correct then it indicates sapphire. The cut is "native" and it appears to have some color zoaning. This indicated a natural sapphire (INDICATES ONLY), having a color shift is also cool. The UV looks like chromium. Perhaps you did better than you think. Without seeing it in person, and having only hearsay results (no offence ment), it is impossible to tell from here.

well, more tests would be needed to confirm the nature of the stone, but I think there's high probability of it being synth. corundum.

Thanks everbody I thought it might have been some kind of missed ID this person travles around to some very remote place from his home in malaysia collecting gems and fossils so my thinking was wrong ID on the gem thats why i was trying so hard to find out what it could be its the color zoning and the color/shift that really made me think it was some how natural i do have the option to send it to someone with all the tool needed from a real ID I was just trying to do it my self becuase id be very Proud to have done it but its a really stumper Under 20x i see no striae I have one more thing im going to do myself thats look under 100x as soon as i get into the lab at work is there anything i would see to tell me its 100% natural :?:

as you have a refractometer, you should first try to confirm that this is indeed corundum (optical character, optical sign and birefringence)
