Moissanite ID is very straight forward - a 10x loupe or better magnification. It is strongly double-refractive.

Used to be it was oriented on the table, so it was easily seen. Now it is frequently thru one of the crown main facets (in C&C stuff).

I remember the supposed story from when moissanite first came out - at a major show an expert was asked by a jewelry publication to write an article on separating diamond from moissanite. Expecting a reasonable time for the research and writing of a scholarly article, they were surprised to be handed a thin folder a short time later. Inside was a sentence - "Get a loupe!!!" Separation is no big deal, and involves no pricey tools.

My memory isn't the best, so if you know the real story, or you are "that person", please give us the first-hand facts!

My recollection of that story is that the quote was "it's doubly refractive".
