My brother purchased a consignment of ancient coins recently, this ring was amongst them, under a bright light the 'stone' is red and has a crazed affect on top, I thought it was probably glass, but with my experience I usually need to measure properties to stand any chance of making an ID, any thoughts on what it may be?

Really difficult to make any guess, may be you can post a picture with a strong torch light under the stone,so that we can see what kind of red it shows. i have came across ancient jewellery and stones many times, but never saw a glass stone studded in a ring like that.normally ancient jewellery consists more of beads made using natural glass. curious to know which coins your brother bought? coins may help to understand the civilisation this ring belonged to and their jewellery patterns can help guess the stone this ring has. Regards
