Here is a brooch that we're inventorying and we don't know what it's supposed to be.
It's platinum with French hallmarks, diamonds, carved moonstone (!) and some enamel that needs work.
any thoughts on what they were going for, here?

i'll add that the moonstone was a specific choice and does (but not in these photos) give a nice little shot of blue.

and, michael, even though you were first with the wizard of oz last time, this might be a LITTLE early for the ol' enterprise.

Turned sideways (with the straight part up and the wheel down) it's not unlike a stylized antique surveyor's wheel.

The combination of materials is not uncommon, but the angle of the diamond, moonstone wheel is curious....as it looks like it is meant to be seen from the side......perhaps a chapeau pin for an evening cloche hat....

I haven't had a chance to photograph it again but I will. Check back in a couple of days.

I was thinking that maybe it was made up from previously used pieces. The ring between the enameled ribs looks like it may have been worn as a ring at some time. I wonder how large that feature is?

ok. i know EVERYONE is waiting with bated breath but...
it was sent to the enameler without my knowledge. so we'll have to wait a zillion years for it to come back.
the bossman thinks is a comet.
in the meantime, michael_e, it's too small to be a ring, and it's oblong.

I have 3 guesses for this.

#1. hat pin circa early 1900's
#2. tie tack circa who knows :)
#3. clasp buttoneer for leather satchel circa mid to late 1800's London or France.

just a guess thou!
