Christies Accused of Stiffing Liz Taylor Trust Elizabeth Taylor’s Sothern Trust is suing Christie's for “(botching) the sales of Elizabeth Taylor's ‘most prized and valuable possessions’ and (stiffing) the late actress' trust of proceeds earmarked for her AIDS foundation,” according to Courthouse News. Among other allegations, the Trust says the auction house unreasonably canceled the $8.8 million sale of the so-called Taj Mahal Diamond necklace, and has failed to return or account for a number of items from the Taylor estate, including a $3 million Bulgari ring. Christie’s, whose 2011 sale of Taylor’s possessions took in more than $115 million, has not yet responded publicly to the suit.
Christie’s has responded to that headline-grabbing suit by the Elizabeth Taylor Sothern Trust. The auction house says the action was prompted by its own efforts to reclaim $8.8 million it says it is owed by the Trust. Reports the New York Post: “The trouble began when a buyer backed out of an $8.8 million deal to purchase Taylor’s Taj Mahal necklace (gifted to her by Richard Burton) at a 2011 auction. But the auction house pre-paid the trust ahead of receiving money from the buyer, who canceled the sale. Now Christie’s wants its money back.” Right, said a Christie’s statement to the paper, ending with “Christie’s looks forward to a speedy resolution of this matter.” Two interesting side notes: “Sothern” was the maiden name of Ms. Taylor’s mother, and media estimates of the proceeds from the 2011 auction of the actress’s possessions range all over the place. Christie’s says it was $183.5 million, so we’ll go with that.
